Throughout the film we get to know him as a rather talented man, who provides for his loving family. Solomon’s community knew as being a fiddle player and a hardworking family man. Solomon seems as a mentally strong person as he manages get through the twelve yearlong torture he is exposed to.
Furthermore, his values stay somewhat intact, such as when he refuses to whip Patsey’s back with the whip when Edwin Epps orders him to do so, but only does it when Patsey herself asks him to do so. Solomon also does not bow down whenever he is being accused of any wrongdoings by his master.
Though his values are steadfast, he through the movie learns that nothing good comes out of being vocal about for example his intelligence, name or who he is in general.
One of the scenes in the movie shows how at point Solomon becomes utterly fed up with John Tibeats who was provoking him. Solomon then grabs John’s whip and starts whipping him with it, but the consequences for this act could not have been foreseen by anyone.
Solomon learns the very hard way that he must not act on his rage, as John then hangs Solomon with his feet barely touching the ground.
