The movie 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northurp describes the life changes Solomon goes through in the period of the 12 - 13 years of being a slave. In the start of the Solomon is living a happy life as a free man, who plays his violin at home and at shows.

Sadly, things change when he gets invited out by 2 men in suits, who say they have a deal for him. The problem with that was, that the guys did not want to be friends with Solomon. Neither did they have a deal for him. What they instead did, was to poison him at a bar, put him in a cell and give him another name.

This was the moment where Solomon’s life got turned upside down. Together with his family they got everything taken away from them.

They all get completely dehumanized and treated like objects. At some point they get sold for money to work in the fields. He gets removed from his family and put in a place he does not know. During the whole film, Solomon never loses sight of his hopes of becoming a free man again.

That causes him to be treated even worse than if he had just been cooperative. In the end is this luckily what gets him out of the bad situation.

In the last place he finds someone who understands him and who is willing to help him find someone who can help Solomon out of this situation. In the end of the film he gets set free by some of his friends who comes and helps him.

Back at his old house is his wife and 2 kids. One of them have grown old and has started her own family. During the whole movie he knows who he is and where he deserves to be. His mood changes a lot throughout the film though. In the start he is very happy, but in order to survive he turns into a coldhearted man, who we all know deep down on the inside has a big warm heart.
