Uddrag
Right from the beginning of the speech it’s clear that Bernie Sanders tries to engage the audience by positioning himself as equal to them.

Bernie Sanders is at the graduation with his wife Jane3 and tells that they both grew up in Brooklyn. Sanders also talks about his youth: “I grew up in Flatbush and graduated from James Madison High School”4 .

The fact that he grew up in Brooklyn encourages the audience to identify with him, as he knows their town and probably has a similar story as many of the graduates in the audience.

Here, he also creates similarities between him and his audience by referring to them as ‘my friends’ and repeating ‘Brooklyn’ several times.
