They leave Haiti in the middle of the night, by boat she, and her family. There are other people they know from their town on the boat. Aline couldn’t say goodbye to her friends or anyone.
They changed boats in the Bahamas to get to Miami. On the way there, they are confronted by a large ship, and they shouted out on a loudspeaker to remain on the boat. But Aline and her family jump into the shallow water, making their way to shore.

Inner characterization
Her parents try to protect Aline and treat her as a child, hiding from her the purpose of the journey, and the danger they are in, in Haiti.
At the beginning of the story, Aline comes across as an innocent child who looks forward to the journey to America, and she picks her favorite blue dress to wear on the journey.
They try to make Aline feel good and safe about the journey by telling her to pick her favorite dress to wear , and giving her hope that the place they are going to is better than their home in Haiti.
Aline makes a transition from innocence to experience during the boat journey and the time she spends in America.
The hardest test for Aline is the lack of freedom she has to endure when she is taken to the hotel. ‘’All we do is watch television all day. No other type of recreation.
No exercise. We can’t even go out in the hallway.’’ . This makes Aline feels trapped and frustrated about the lack of freedom, she used to have.
Her love for her Family is also obvious in her reaction to hearing her father been on hunger strike; ‘’I wish the guards would let me go near him so I could put my arms around him and tell him to eat something, so we don’t die her in these foreign prisons.’’
This suggest that she begun to cast herself in an adult role, where she is the one offering comfort to the rest of the family and not the other way around, and that’s also shows the maturity she has gained over the journey.
