Growing up without parenting leaves marks on one’s future development. This is the scenario in the short story “Streamlining” by Muli Amaye. Being an early adult and handling things on your own are some of the central themes in the story, which revolves around a big sister named Jocie.
Jocie’s mother left her alone with her little brother Brandon, when Jocie was only seventeen years old1. The two siblings are now adults and handle the situation around their mother’s disappearance in their own way.

The story is narrated by a third-person narrator, who narrates the short story with a limited point of view. Therefore, we are informed about the main character Jocie’s life through her thoughts and feelings. The narrator observes and follows Jocie, her perspective and her experiences.
Jocie is thirty-two years old and lives in the United Kingdom. Jocie and her little brother Brandon are a mixture of their English mother and African father. Both their parents left them in an early age, leaving Jocie as the adult.
The way that Jocie’s parents left her, has given her lots of responsibility for both herself and others. She has taught herself to be strong and mature and this has benefited her in relation to her work today. Jocie is passionate and skilled at her job, as the head of managing a creative team.
She is a specific woman, who is not negatively affected by others. Beside work, she practices yoga to relive herself, as well as her mother. It frustrates Jocie that her mother favours Brandon even though he is being irresponsible.
Jocie believes that it is his mother's fault that Brandon has grown up and become irresponsible.6 She is so angry with her mother that even the word "mother" fills her with dread.
Jocie is filled with so many feelings and thoughts inside her body that the situation, regarding the fruits, turns out to be a more ridiculous situation than it really is8. She realizes that instead of getting mad at herself, it is more fun to see how mad her mother gets about such a minor thing9.
