Indledning
In the short story “Vernissage,” we are introduced to Alex, his mother Frances, and his father John. In the start of the story Alex is picked up from school by his mother.
They talk about his day at school, and he explains that they are doing a project for nature class where he has to talk about earthworms.
With this and other information we get later on in the story such as the fact that his toothbrush is formed as a crocodile, we can estimate that Alex may be about 8-12 years old.

Alex’ parents are portrayed very stiffly and as a couple who has fallen out of love. Before his father comes home, his mother is putting on lipstick, probably trying to make herself seem more appealing to her estranged husband.
When his father enters the bedroom, instead of giving his wife a hello hug or kiss, he stops about three feet from her and just greets her with “Frances.” She tries to woo him by trying on the new dress she bought, while mentioning that he once complemented her in this purple colour.
He doesn’t seem to remember but agrees anyways, as to not hurt her feelings. This tells us that his mum is much more in love with his father than he is with her but Alex’ father almost seems to feel bad about not loving her anymore.
