It seems like a lower-class society with a lot of poverty and bad people, based on his description of how everyone is out to get you, and steal” People are as mean one place as they are another and they’re always out to get you”.

The town is also run by bad people, the sheriff Claine is the ringleader of what might be the KKK, based on the time the story is written in. He does not have anything positive to say about the town, an only describes it as a bad place.

The author sends a message of how a man thinks and, his desire to have power and control. Tom McAfee wants to send the message that a man like this clearly knows what he is doing and how he treats people, and he doesn’t care.

The location of the text also plays the role of the blatant racism present at the time because people of the south (Texas) was way more patriotic and against the blacks.

Tom McAfee has chosen to portray the character in a very honest way, there is no hiding the cruel truth and personality traits the man has, and the character is very much aware of his behavior.
