Throughout the article Niven uses third person pronouns such as they and them. This adds to a tone of othering and attacking the opposition.
Although it strengthens his own opinion it also suggests that his opinion is very biased. Niven continues to argument that there is not much thinking behind the Union, by criticizing the opposition:
“As the union limps on – for a while – with the aid of such small-c conservatism, there is an astonish lack of thinking.” (ll.81-82) Once again Niven uses imagery as well as the negative connotating adjective astonish to appeal to his reader’s pathos.
Niven also arguments that the Union is fragile by generalizing and appealing to a widespread belief: “Like that other failed unionism of recent times – the campaign for Britain to remain in the European Union – support for the United Kingdom is hampered by association with a status quo that many people in the British Isles feel has not worked for them.” (ll.75-77)
Although these types of arguments are helpful when it comes yo influence the reader, they are not very strong and reliable in depth.
