Indledning
Honesty, decency, liberty, and justice are words we hope for, when we talk about democracy, the cold war, or some other big change in our society.

But what we, unfortunately, primarily feel are mendacity, indecency, subjugation, and inequity.

These are the main feelings in George Orwell’s novel ‘1984’ from 1949, which relevance of today, will be discussed in this analytical essay with focus on Dorian Lynskey’s biography ‘The ministry of truth’ from 2019.

Hope is the one feeling stronger than fear. And fear is what dictators, the government or any other superior person is capable of abusing, if we let them.

Whilst having a serious tone, Lynskey also adds humor to it. “At a third performance, when Winston Smith’s chief antagonist O’Brien asked:

“What year is it?”, a woman shouted: “It’s 2017 and this is fucked up!” By Lynskey doing so; adding humor to his biography,
it makes it more cheerful without it being too heavy and depressing, but still maintains the serious tone.

As written above, it does not only have a serious tone, but also a personal tone with Lynskey providing us with his own experiences.

”I found it shocking and compelling, but this was circa 1990, when communism and apartheid were on the way out, optimism reigned and the world didn’t feel particularly Orwellian.”

By doing this, Lynskey shows us that he has knowledge on the subject, which helps him set the tone as more personal and likewise makes his biography more personal and adds credibility to it.

By starting some of his sentences with ‘I was’, ‘I first’ etc. it contributes to the personal tone as well.

“I first encountered Nineteen Eighty-Four as a teenager in suburban south London.” While telling us about his own experiences, he invites us into his mind, which makes us, as readers, trust him more, and by doing so he gets more credible.

And as written above, by Lynskey having knowledge on the subject it establishes his credibility and by doing so it builds up his ethos.
