As I mentioned earlier, Farahany opens her speech by mentioning a personal anecdote about the Iranian Green Movement.

Since the beginning of the speech starts in media res, the audience may be left confused, as the relation to technology and mental privacy is not presented immediately.

Especially since the title of the TED talk is a rhetorical question, the audience will expect the question to be answered.

Her Iranian-American heritage is very prominent in the speech, as she uses it to build ethos, logos and trustworthiness by combining her background and profession.

If the message came from a less credible speaker, concerns about oppressive governments reading minds might be brushed off as a conspiracy theory.

However, given Farahany’s extensive education, background, and the explicit manner in which she presents her points, she is better equipped to make her case more persuasive.
