Strawberry Spring is a horror short story written by King in 1968 about an unnamed narrator that reads a story about a serial killer in the newspaper.
The narrator begins thinking about events that took place eight years’ prior during his college days when a brutal serial killer was on the loose on the college campus.
The press named the serial killer Springheel Jack after the long-clawed, fire breathing demon that allegedly terrorized London in the 1800s leaving no evidence at the scene of the crimes. After eight years Springheel Jack returns to town with a new murder victim because of the arrival of “strawberry spring”.
The name “Strawberry Spring” is a dreamt up ‘season’ by Stephen King referring to a rare weather occurrence that returns every 8-10 years that emerges after a long winter but for a short time the weather turns warm and especially foggy.
The theme of this short story is in synchronization with King’s writing norm with paranoia, suspense, and gruesome murders.
The story is set in New Sharon, New England namely the campus of New Sharon Teachers' College where the murders are committed.
The time setting takes place in a current state of the narrator’s thoughts of the events that happened eight years ago however, his current state of mind and suspicious details of his whereabouts the night of the most recent murder makes the present time relevant to the story.
