Indledning
Emma Watson held a speech at the UN Headquarters in New York on 20. September 2014. Emma Watson is of course known as Hermione from Harry Potter, but the speech is not about wizards and magical spells.

It is about an issue that is present in every corner on this planet, inequality. She is therefore launching a campaign called “HeForShe”.

This essay will focus on Emma Watson’s speech, which I will analyze by using the rhetorical pentagram.

Rhetorical questions were also used. For example, when she was talking about the word “feminism”, she asked the audience:

“Why is the word such an uncomfortable one?” (l. 23) This can help by keeping the audience attached as they may feel that she is talking to them.

Inequality of the sexes is big and certainly a very relevant topic to discuss. Emma Watson herself has been a target of this inequality herself.

Early in the speech she saiys “When at 14 I started being sexualized by certain elements of the press. When at 15 my girlfriends started dropping out of their sports teams because they didn’t want to appear “muscly”.

When at 18 my male friends were unable to express their feelings.” (ll. 15-18) This goes to show that this issue is personal to her, and this might be the main reason for her making this speech and starting this new movement.

Because inequality has affected her. Of course, she also believes that other women shouldn’t have to feel like her, be looked down upon, just because they are not male.
