In September 2014 actress and women´s rights advocate Emma Watson gave a speech at a special event for the HeForShe campaign. In the speech Emma Watson speaks about the issues that both men and women are facing in the world of gender inequality. Through the speech, Emma tries to encourage and invite everyone to contribute and make a difference by the campaign. Through her powerfully use of pathos, Emma is able to make a powerful and deeply touching speech to the audience.
Emma begins her speech by reaching out for help from the audience, and she says, that she actually needs everyone to be involved. Already here, Emma has caught the attention of the audience by using the words “I need you”. Before Emma delves deeper into her reasons, she tells the audience, that she was “appointed as Woman Goodwill Ambassador six months ago” and this immediately builds her trust and establishes ethos.
After this, Emma starts talking about the word “feminism”, and that she has realized, that the word too often has become synonymous with man-hating. Emma therefore defines what the word really means: “The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes”.
This also builds her credibility because she proofs that feminism is not what people actually think. Being a feminist simply means that you believe in the fact that women and men should have equal rights in the world.
