Hello fellow students,
I have been asked to give a speech about “Social media and social responsibility” today. But first I would like to introduce myself to the ones of you that don’t know who I am.
My name is Sofie Pedersen, I am 19 years old and like all you guys I am a student at the Department of Media and Communications at London School of Economics (LSE).
Especially Facebook is a big part of this dilemma, because the ads that so the advertisers use a very big amount of money on every month are appearing next to inappropriate content like hate speech, pornography, terrorist content, etc.
More exact Facebook earns about 69,7 billion dollars per year from advertisers . Therefore
almost a third of the advertisers are considering joining a month-long boycott of Facebook to convince other advertisers that they are not doing enough to fight hate speech on their platform.
The World Federation of Advertisers has therefore made a survey that shows that a third of the top 58 advertisers will, or are likely to, suspend advertising, while a further 40% are also considering doing so .
