Have you ever felt suicidal? Based on a national (US) survey it is estimated that approximately 1.4 million adults aged 18 or older made at least one suicide attempt.

Adult females reported a suicide attempt 1.5 times as often as males.

The reason women tend to commit suicide in about 45% of cases, is due to massive pressure from, work, profession, or school.

This is the case of Hailey Phegler who is the main character in T. Coraghessan Boyles story.

When she glances up from her phone in a tic of annoyance, the first person she locks eyes with is Stephanie Joiner, who was in her Introduction to Poetry class last spring and who has zero style and a brain the size of a Snickers bar, but who’s here nonetheless, in cap and gown and with her hair combed out and sprayed with shellac, all set to graduate. (l.14-16)

Here we see how extremely judgmental Hailey is, as the first thing she thinks about Stephanie is that she has neither brain nor style.

We can possibly assume from this that she has an inner restlessness about her and is very unsure of herself.

We can relate this to the fact that she struggles in school and is afraid that she will not graduate.

One of the reasons for Hailey's behavior and low self-esteem may stem from her relationship with her mother. We are told that for as long as she could remember, her mother has harped on her and nagged her.

This is not what one would normally call a healthy mother-daughter relationship. Furthermore, we are told that the source of this toxic relationship comes from the fact that her mother believes that Hailey is a procrastinator, meaning that she is someone who tends to waste time. (l. 45-48).

Besides all this, there is no doubt that already the first six lines of the text are extremely disturbing, since one of the messages reads "I want to kill myself" (l. 4).

You quickly find out the author behind the message, as you are immediately introduced to Hailey and her situation.
