Indledning
Is it possible to have everything and look happy, but be miserable inside? Sometimes loneliness and depression overcome the happiness in life and takes the good energy out of the human body. Depression and loneliness are one of few themes we meet in the short story “Pretending to know the words” by Helen Cooper from 2014.

The short story is about a man named Recoba, a young Uruguayan man who lives in the UK. He has dreamed about becoming a successful football player since his childhood and becomes one of the best footballers in the UK. Although he has everything, he isn’t happy and doesn’t feel worthy.

The main character dissociates his tow identities as Luis and Recoba. Luis is his inner and his emotional part. He often thinks about calling his mom and hasn’t called his mom in a while. “He thought again of his mother.... listening to her voice, her language” (p. 1, l.20-21). The distance between them affects Luis and his family relationship. He feels the need to call her mother and hear her speak her language. It remains him who he really is, and it links him more to his family. He doesn’t feel home in the UK and feels like he is drowning. Recoba is his facade he wants to be seemed as. Even though he has everything, he still misses something and feels guilty for not being happy with what he has achieved. He comes originally from Uruguay and a poverty environment.
