Indledning
For several centuries, men have been the ones who worked to feed the family, while the women stayed home and took care of the house and kids.

They were the dominant gender, but in most western societies today this norm is heavily debated, and no longer a common thing in the majority of households.

In the short story “My house”, Jolene Anderson gives a stereotypical “rednecks” perspective on family values in the old south and on his surroundings.

The story shows his perspective on the debated topic of gender norms. This unknown narrator lives in a small town in Alabama and is a true southern male.

He is a proud gun owner and man of the household, who always gets the last word and has strong opinions on pretty much everything.

He mentions that he was a part of world war two, which again is something an American and especially southern American takes great pride in, because he served his country.

Now he is the owner of a small store in town, where the family at times is forced to help, when he finds it convenient. His family consists of him, his two daughters Ellen Jean and Martha Kay and his wife Rosie.

When he discovered that his older daughter started “to paint her face” , when going to school, he pulled her out and forced her to work in his store.
