Ever since Donald Trump decided to leave the Paris Agreement the USA has received a lot of backlash from all over the globe and made many people even more worried about the ongoing climate crisis.

This backlash has started a big debate and affected the USA in a very negative way that the new president Joe Biden will have to fix by himself.

We hear just how he will do this In his speech at COP26 where he gives the audience a remarkable insight into his plans for the future when it comes to the climate.

The style of language in the speech is mainly formal, as the speech is used in a serious political situation. We can also see the formality in the passage from line 23-31 as the sentences are long and contains more complicated words e.g.

‘’The science is clear, we only have a brief window left before us to raise our ambitions and to raise to meet the task that’s rapidly narrowing’’ (ll.24-25).

But we also see a few informal features in the speech, such as contractions like ''That's'' and ''It's''. Biden also uses techniques like repetitions, rhetorical questions, and direct address doing this passage.

We see an example of all three techniques when he asks ‘’will we act, will we do what is necessary? Will we seize the enormous opportunity before us or will we condemn future generations to suffer? (ll.24-25)

the rhetorical question helps him control and persuade the audience, and by repeating it he emphasizes the importance of climate change and the damage we have to stop.

Directly addressing the reader also helps to persuade them and will convince them easier since he is directly speaking to them and putting them into the context.

By using ''we'' throughout the entire speech he also engages his audience by making them a part of the speech and not only making them listen to it, if he had used an indirect mode of address it might have been harder for him to engage the audience.

Biden uses multiple methods to engage his audience, he also does it by using the different modes of persuasion.
