Indledning
Jesse is a short story, written by Joy Boothe and published in 2012. The main theme is racism, which is focused on throughout the story. The focus in this analytical essay will be on the setting, the main character, theme and message.
The story takes place in Alabama. It begins at the time the main Character is 5 years old and ends at the time she is 27.
Which means that the story lasts over a time period of 22 years. The whole story is memories from the main character, which means that that the story doesn’t say anything specifically about where she is.
One of the only places being told is on line 92 “I am eleven and staying at Granny’s.” Besides that, the memories pretty much just take place in her home and at her father’s work.

A very important role in the story is Jesse, the father’s coworker. Jesse is black, and at the time of this story black people didn’t have the same rights as whites.
The main character also mentions that they can’t have Jesse in their house because he is a nigger.
For that reason, Jesse plays a big role in this story, we wouldn’t know that this was an issue in the story if he wasn’t in it.
The grandmother really doesn’t like black people, and the mother isn’t too happy about them either, but the father and main character likes Jesse, “I can tell Daddy likes him”.
