backgrounds, values, and beliefs. One thing that has stuck throughout thousands of years is the caste system - an old but traditional way of categorizing the Indian population.

Since then, Dalits have become 21,8% of the Indian population, with the lowest percentages of educated women and men in jobs out of all the castes.
The income gap between the highest and the lowest caste is also around 60%, meaning the gap in earnings, assets, and net worth.

To help integrate the Dalits into the modern society, the government added quotas to certain jobs and admissions for university. However, Indians still suffer from the vestiges of the hierarchy in India based on one’s cast.
