This difference can lead to confusion and misunderstandings. Miscommunication can mess with people’s behavior.

The structure of “how should he have known” plays a huge role through the emotional journey of the characters.
The story starts “in media res” where the father checks on his son, and the story just begins with no background information.
In the end of the story, it is revealed that there had been a miscommunication between the two characters.
The reason why the boy is fearing dead from the start is because he doesn’t know the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit, because the family have immigrated to the country.
As a reader, we do not know that information yet, and therefore we also get annoyed of the father, when he is going out to hunt, even though his son is sick lying in bed at home, and even maybe having his last breath soon.
When the boy and the father finally is communicating, the boy realize that he isn’t dying. That is when the climax happens, and the conflict of the story gets solved.
