“They say Britain is a melting pot of culture” . This is how some people describe and define Britain. As a country where each culture represents a different nationality, race or ethnicity.
Britain is known to have a diverse citizenry. To name a few: Black, mixed-race, Chinese, Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi.
These citizens are British on paper, but as they have a different nationality or a different heritage they tend to want to identify with it as well. As it is a part of their identity.
The government in the UK have on behalf of theses minorities implemented a system called BAME . To refer to collective ethnic minority population.
Tossing them all in one category, has not proved sufficient. Many citizens do not identify with BAME. They feel that it is generalising, and it is not affective, because BAME stands for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic, and in retrospect the only thing these different minority groups have in common is that they are minorities.
The citizens are not being properly identified when they identify themselves as BAME , and ,therefore, would rather use a term as “Black British” or “British Indian”.
Which properly represents their nationality, race or ethnicity. Looking at term such as BAME, reflects on how minorities in Britain are viewed.
The government would like to find a term where they all can fit under. The problem is that these different nationalities, races or ethnicities within the term BAME, are too different to be put under the same category.
