Indledning
Sometimes it takes losing everything to realize what you had. And sometimes realizing what you had can actually make you feel thankful for losing everything.
This difficulty is what the short story “Au Sable” by Joyce Carol Oates includes. The story starts with a phone call between Otto and his son in-law.
Otto wants to tell his daughter Lizbeth something very important, but he don’t want to tell it direct to her, so instead Otto makes Mitchell tell his daughter the important news about him and his wife. Something is wrong though. “And here was the first wrong note” (p.104.l.3)

In the short story there is a clear contrast between the couples. Mitchell is feeling scared and empty after his phone call with Otto because he knows what about to happen soon. “Everyone is away.
I think it’s like au sable here” (p.110. l?). Mitchell is a city man he likes to live with noise, so he associates Au sable with emptiness.
The setting indicates that the two couples have different lives but also the contrast to each other. The two couple’s houses could also be a contrast which could symbolize the two couples love to each other.
Au sable is described as far away from the civilization therefore far from everything no one or northing to distract you from the “real life”.
Contrast to Mitchell and Lizbeth the modern people from the city which could result in the reason that they don’t like to visit otto and Teresa. The two couples are both bad at taking initiative to each other’s lives, but Lizbeth is trying unlike Teresa.
