People of the United States of America generally advocate freedom in almost every sense of the word.

Most Americans agree on the legitimacy of the constitution and on the ideals of freedom rooted in it.

Freedom and liberty, pride and patriotism are words which are often used to characterize the values of the American people.

n spite of these general values which create a sense of unification and national pride, there has always been a significant divide when it comes to more specific politics/policies?.

The two major parties of America, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party, both emphasise the core values of the constitution but the Republicans usually advocate less government interference, lower taxation and more conservative policies than the more liberal Democratic Party.

A prominent Republican is the Austrian-born actor, bodybuilder and politician, Arnold Schwarzenegger who in 2003 was elected Governor of California.

In a speech at the Republican national convention on august 31, 2004, newly elected governor Schwarzenegger held/gave a speech in which he supported the then American president George W. Bush and the campaign for his re-election.

Not only does Arnold Schwarzenegger defend and praise American values, he also antagonises communism and terrorism in order to show that the American democracy is the ideal direction?.

He further illustrates this by using a metaphor with the epithet “liberating” in line 58-59, page 3: “...they hate the liberating breeze of democracy”, and continuing with these words in line 60-61:

“But, ladies and gentlemen, their hate is no match for America’s decency.” Another example of metaphorical language is when Schwarzenegger aims to show that America is an inspiration to the rest of the world:

“We are still the lamp lighting the world, especially those who struggle” (line 76-77, page 4)

A less metaphorical and more logos-heavy way of defending and praising the ways of America is at the bottom of page 1, line 20-24, where Schwarzenegger says that America has the highest economic growth of the world’s industrialised nations and that you should not be pessimistic about the economy.

Despite the patriotism and pride rooted in these sentences, they seem more factual than some of the other sections of the speech.

Logos is also used on page 2, line 31-33, where Schwarzenegger mentions that the economy is moving ahead, in order to show the progress made by President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
