Indledning
Home is a place where you feel welcome, a place that makes us feel safe, a place that in order to adapt you must accept the repercussion that are bound to come with it.
“English Babu” is a short story composed by Vijay Medtia and is about a cultural disconnected father, Ramesh who came to a foreign country in order to find better opportunities in life, with no plans of settling in this lonely, cold and unfamiliar country for the rest of his life.
Forty years later Ramesh now must deal with the cultural dilemma of his second son Prakash, marrying an “outsider”, a foreigner, a British woman by the name of Rebecca1. The short story “English Babu” shows us how hard it can be for parents to come to terms with the consequences of moving to a foreign country with different cultural norms and how that, eventually could lead to a tear in the family.

The main character in the short story is Ramesh, a profound husband, father of three children who reminisces about his nostalgic past in India and how he gradually started to lose his sense of cultural values of his old country. He could no longer relate to the country that he once had called home.
Ramesh had come from a prosperous family in the north of India where he graduated from commerce2. He then later immigrated to England in 1965 in high hopes of finding a job and then return to India five years later.
This turned out to be false however and because of the several problems and rejections he had faced, forever staying in England was beginning to look inevitable for him.
As the years went by, he was slowly starting to make progress in this ‘new world’ and managed to get a better job with a wage high enough for him to buy a bigger, warmer and more secure house.
This made him and appreciate the British more and began to adapt to the British environment and began to speak better English, which gradually made him forget his past and most important of all, his promise.
