In the TED Talk Giridharadas focuses on the two contrasts of the American dream and the inequality in the American society.
The contrasts are first shown in the title of the speech “A tale of two Americas” , which shows us the diversity in American society.
Giridharadas main statement is shown trough his two stories about Raisuddin Bhuiyan, a Bangladeshi immigrant, and Mark Stroman, a white supremacist.
These two stories illustrate the contrast of how the American dream is thriving for some, such as Raisuddin, however that the American dream is harder for some, such as Stroman and doesn’t always give Americans the chance to pursue happiness.
The main argument is also shown when Giridharadas refers to his time spent in India,” The American Dream was thriving, but only in India.
In America, not so much.” 2 , this supports Giridharadas argument that states that it is easier to pursue the American dream if you are not ethnically an American citizen.
Another important argument from Giridharadas is that America is dividing into two different societies, “An America that still dreams, still strives, still imagines that tomorrow can build on today, and an America that has resigned to fate, buckled under stress and chaos, lowered expectations.”3 , this illustrates a contrast of those who still believe the American dream exist an happiness can be found, and those who have given up all hope.
