Indledning
Low-end tourism is becoming more and more popular in the United Kingdom, especially among the younger generation. They simply want to have a good time abroad without their parents.
However, whilst they are having the time of their lives, the residents are experiencing quite the opposite.
A normal day for them is having to deal with drunk and nude tourists, fights, prostitution, and sexual assaults. In the article “A summer rite in Spain: Coping with British tourist invasion,” by the journalist David Segal from 20th August 2023, he addresses the rising problem of low-end tourism and its impact on the residents.

Stylistically, at the beginning of the article (ll. 22-30) the language is descriptive. In these lines, the writer strikes up a conversation with James Henderson, who is described as a: “19-year-old with blond hair and a sheepish smile” (l. 22.).
The detailed description of James Henderson’s appearance creates an image in the reader's mind of who is being spoken to.
In addition, the language also captures the setting, which indicates low-end tourism: “Punta Ballena. a crammed and gritty strip of pubs, tattoo parlors and lap dance emporiums that bursts with action until dawn every summer day.” (ll. 27-29) and even the atmosphere of the setting using words like” revelry” and “boozy holiday,” which contributes to an even better image of the situation .
Overall, this style of language helps to convey every detail of the situation to the reader, which in this case, helps to build pathos, as it emphasises how it must not be great to live in such an environment.
The style of the language in these particular lines also appears to be informal, as he uses expressions such as: “pretty psyched” and “knocked back roughly 20 drinks.” These expressions indicate a casual approach, thus making it relatable and easier to read.
