Analytical essay

The short story “That Summer” written by Safia Moore, takes place in a protestant community, during summertime.

The short story deals with a young boy, who has a feeling, that someone is going to die that summer. With his friends Noel and Ivan, the boy, goes to see Mrs. Walsh, an elderly Catholic woman, sunbathing.

The same summer, two children is missing and the whole community is looking for them. Eventually, the missing children reappears, but naked.

Mrs. Walsh leaves the crowd but drops her belt. The boy wants to bring it back to her, but she dies in a car accident.

In the end, the boy notices that the family is emptying out Mrs. Walsh house. The boy gives Mrs. Walsh’ brother the belt, but the brother wants the boy to keep it.
