Indledning
The psychological features of a person can be affected in many different ways, by, for example upbringing, drugs, environment, goals, or family.

But how are we to tackle the problems we face? And do they affect the state of mind a person is in? It’s not unusual that people try to overcome their fears or problems by escaping from reality.

These are some of the central themes in the short story “A Last Set” by Daniel Pope.

Also, the car is a big part of the setting in the story because they have a lot of their conversations in the car while driving to their motel and from the motel to the place where they have to give their last performance.

Speaking of the motel, that is also an important part of the setting because it’s sets the scene for the first real argument between the three of them, which opens up on their mutual connections.

The motel could also be seen as a symbol in the way it is shaped. The motel is the same shape as a capital L, which is described in the text as;

“I opened the door and […] walked to the motel shaped like a big capital L” (p.1 l. 2-3)

This could symbolize that they have already lost, because the “L” is often used to tell people they have lost or as we say, “taken the L”.

Speaking of symbolism, the name of the band playing the same evening as CJ’s band is called Crabapple which is a wood species that grows little apples.

It blossoms in spring and colorful fruit in autumn. The fruits often persist throughout winter. This could symbolize that the band Zoe, Paul and CJ have formed is “old news”.

Whereas the other band is more modern and up to date, therefore they will survive the hard times, which could be symbolized by the winter, whereas CJ’s band won’t make it.
