The story about Rick Goff is a central subject of the text. Nicholas Kristof uses him as a very personal contrast to refute the ideal picture of USA. He describes Rick Goff as a very hard working and sensitive man who cares for others.
Nicholas Kristof repeatedly mentioned that Rick had a lack of opportunity in his life which comes from his mother’s death, at a young age, and that his father abandoned the family. He didn’t have the same opportunities as some other wealthy people. Nicholas Kristof uses this Rick Goff as an example of the social mobility’s importance in today’s society. (page 1, line 66 – 67)
