It all began in 1947 with a sketch created on a beach in Wales by Range Rover's Technical Director Maurice Wilks and his brother Spencer Wilks - Rover's Managing Director.
While using a Jeep on the Wilks farm in Anglesey, the Wilks discovered the need for a reliable and robust off-road vehicle.
This car was designed using a Jeep frame and a
Land Rover car engine. Simple body panels made from light materials and a frame made from waste material prevented the use of rationed steel and the usage of complex and expensive press tools.
