Indledning
Did we really go through a whole pandemic without discussing a worldwide problem? Because as we know we find ourselves in the middle of a pandemic, but we never really talked or discussed about all of the aspects on the pandemic, such as mental health.
Mental health issues are a big worldwide problem, that comes with a lot of taboos and negative impacts on people.
In the following assignment I’ll look into Richard Bentall’s opinion piece” Has the pandemic really caused a ‘tsunami’ of mental health problems” written on The Guardian the 9th of February 2021 and an article from BBC, and by that discuss whether or not it’s true.
Richard Bentall who is a professor of clinical psychology tells us what his thoughts are in proportion to the lockdown and peoples mental health.
Bentall is referring to a report that the university of Sheffield did, where they explained how we are now “facing the greatest threat to mental health since the second world war.”

Bentall uses some different rhetorical devices in his article, and throughout the article we can see that its mostly dominated by the effect of using logos. He uses a lot of statistics to prove some points, and to talk to his target groups common sense.
“These are contrasted with a small group who have been unwell throughout (6.5%)” Also, he uses his position as being a professor to show that he is reliable as an author.
Therefore, the text is also dominated by ethos. Bentall uses a persuasive style of writing in this article. As we know the article is an opinion piece, and therefore we can connect it to the style of writing, due to the fact that he is trying to get his readers to believe his point of view.
He uses both justifications, arguments and statistics when trying to convince the receiver. (devices, u.d.)
We can easily put this article into Toulmin’s model of argumentation, due to the fact that Bentall’s main claim and his arguments fit into the three main categories’ respectively:
claim, data and warrant. His claim is pretty obvious and it’s the statement that we argue. As said before he is trying to convince the reader that his claim is the best
and he does that by using facts and statistics, therefore data is also represented in the article. Furthermore, he uses a warrant to support his main claim. (Østergaard, 2021)
