On a warm day in late June villagers gather in the square in their village to participate in a lottery run by Mr. Summers, who officiates at all the big city events. The lottery is held as a tradition every year.
The children arrive first and begin collecting stones until their parents call them to order. Mrs. Hutchinson arrives lat e and chats briefly with her friend, Mrs. Delacroix.
The Lottery summary
There are five people total in the Hutchinson family. Mr. Summers places five slips of paper into the box and each member of the family draws. Tessie (Mrs. Hutchinson) draws a slip of paper with a big black dot in the center.
Tessie becomes the scapegoat of the lottery draw. The villagers attack her, and the prize for the lottery really is a stoning. Then Tessie die
The message is to show how people act when they are trying to save their own lives, and how the ethical compass fades away when your own life is in danger.
