Harry Houdini’s escape acts and the ability to get out of handcuffs made him world-renowned in the first decades of the twentieth century. He became known as the king of the escape artists.

Houdini’s most famous act was probably the dive from Belle Isle Bridge in Detroit. The 27th of November 1906, he jumped in Detroit River, with his hands cuffed.

The river was supposedly frozen and therefore a hole had been carved in the ice for him to jump through.

The escape from the handcuffs went as planned, but when he swam up to the hole he discovered that the stream had carried him away from the hole.

Houdini’s team of helpers knew, that he was not able to keep his breath under water, for a longer period of time, than three minutes.

If he was not to appear, a man with a rope tied around his waist, would have to jump into the river, to get him.
