Ethos is used when the speaker is trying to use someone’s credibility and reliability to make the audience trust them.

An example of him using ethos at the beginning of his speech is when he says: “Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation.”

He is using the credibility of Abraham Lincoln who was a famous president that fought for Afro-American equality.

He wants the audience to feel that they are fighting along with this great man. By using this man as an example, he gains the audience’s trust.

You can see Martin Luther King using many of the stylistical devices during his speech. He is using repetition when he begins his sentence four times in a row with “One hundred years later”.

You can also see him using it when he says: “Let freedom ring from”, he is using these devices to underline the importance of what he says.

When he says: “Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation”, he is using an allusion to make people remember the historical event when Abraham Lincoln ended slavery by signing the Emancipation proclamation.

Martin Luther King uses many similes during his speech you can see it when he says: “we will not be satisfied until "justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.” and “. “This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope”.

An example of his use of parallelism is when he is continuously saying: “I have a dream that”. He is using all these stylistical devices to make his speech more interesting for his audience and to keep their attention.

But also, because these devices help to emphasize the importance of what he is telling them and increase the intensity when he says the same words repeatedly.

It can also help simplify complicated things by referring to known experiences and in that way also make the audience engage more.
