Summary
The short story “Only You Farang Are So Easy to Come and Leave”, written by Mai Nardone, is about a culture-rich family of three, who has been strongly affected by the financial crisis in Southeast Asia in 1997-1999, the father of American descent, the Mother “Ma” of Thai, and partly Chinese descent, and the daughter Lara who is trapped in the culture clash between them.
The financial problems, which the husband solely is being held responsible for, even though Ma does not have a job, and is not planning to get one either, forces the family to move back into their old, displeasing townhouse in the outskirts of Bangkok.
As a temporary move, the father moves back to the U.S. to revive their economy, but he has had enough of the cultural barrier between him and his wife, so he stays there, and leaves the rest of the family in the slumps.

Uddrag
Most of the short story “Only You Farang Are So Easy to Come and Leave” takes place in Thailand, in the outskirts of Bangkok, but in the end, the setting shifts to a small apartment somewhere in the U.S.
The environment is rather shadowy and the social setting is probably the lower middle class as the family, for example, had to move back into their old townhouse because of financial problems.
We are also informed that there, near their home, is a condominium that once was nice and luxurious, but since then has been turned into a mess. “Graffiti was on the embellishment, and inky swamps had formed in what had been intended to be private, balcony pools” (ll. 60-61).
It seems as if the family are living in the slumps, but however, they are not insanely poor, and can even afford to have their daughter attending a British international school (l. 9)
