This speech will have focus on an accounting for factors, which is contributing to the obesity epidemic in this country. These factors that society has yet failed to address successfully. I do as well intend to talk about preventive measures that society, companies and other third-party organizations can take, in order to effectively counter this growing problem.
However, what is the factors contributing and how big is this problem?
Obesity is today the leading cause of preventable death in America, and 31.8% of Americans is obese today, which make this country, the country with the 2nd highest obesity rate in the world.1 Obesity costs this country $150 billion a year and accounts for more than 10% of the national medical costs. In other words, it costs more than half of my country, Denmark’s, GDP.
Obesity is an epidemic disease, which causes heart diseases, diabetes and cancer, all of them lethal diseases.
However, why is obesity such a significant problem in the states, when most of the world successfully counter this disease?
The roots of this epidemic are founded in the central society environment and structure. Nutrition, level of physical activity, economic and cultural factors are all factors, which has caused the epidemic to expand.
The nutrition culture of Americans has changed dramatically over the past 50 years, and this factor has two dimensions. The 1st dimension is that access to processed, unhealthy food has increased. McDonalds and KFC shops are almost available in almost every local community these days. Fast food is cheaper than healthy vegetables, which in itself is a significant concern.
The 2nd dimension is that many low-income families do not have the budget or the opportunity to buy healthy food in their local community, which makes it hard for them to breach their nutrition cycle. While the bad economy has pushed many Americans into poverty, this factor of availability and price is making the situation more desperate.
