Early Modern English: 1500 - 1800
One of the most crucial events in the English language, was the Printing press introduced into England by William Caxton in 1476.
From that point, up to about 20.000 books were printed in the next 150 years. This was a huge deal as many texts could be produced.
The bible was translated again, along with many religious texts. Shakespeare’s poems and plays were printed as well.
It all lead to new words coming into the English language, some from Greek and Latin, and others from Arabic and Norwegian etc.
Late Modern English: 1800 - Present day
The Industrial Revolution in many ways expanded the English language, as there was a need for new phrases and words for these new ideas and things for the period.
Example for some words:
Science: vaccine, oxygen, bacteria etc.
Technology: electricity, engine, telephone etc.
The British Empire began around the 16th Century, at that time, 5-7 million people spoke the English language. The next 300 years, that number grew around 50 times, with 80% of them living outside Britain.
The Rise of the British Empire during the 18th and 19th-century widely expanded the English language all around the world.
The Empire was as its absolute peak in 1921 after WW1 - around 25% of the globe’s surface.

1. Cookie - the word “cookie” comes from the Dutch term “Koekie”, which is used to describe a sweet snack.
2. Lemon - the word “lemon” comes from the Arabic term “Laimun”, which describes a yellow citrus fruit.
3. Karaoke - Karaoke originates from Japan, and the term stands for “an empty orchestra” and is the act of amateur singing with recorded music as we know it.
4. Ketchup - Ketchup comes from China and is pronounced as “Ke-stiap”.
5. Justice - the word “justice” comes from the old French language, and is pronounced as “jostise”, which means administration of law.
6. Massage - the word “massage” started as “massa” in the Portuguese language, but later come to known as massage which means to rubbing and kneading of muscles.
