The Spanish language is one of the most used languages in the world. It might be the language with the most native speakers ever.

Therefore, it is odd that the scenario of a tourist in Spain, ordering food for example, is most often imagined with an English conversation.

Why is the tourist speaking English to a person who is from a country, with a much more spread out language than English is? A valid reason could be the tourist learning English in school instead of Spanish, therefore simply not being able to speak the language.

Without directly telling the reader what to do, Law makes the reader imagine a world where German takes over and English is pushed to the shadows.

This can for example be seen in this quote. “Let’s say those loony UKIP types were right - Brussels really did want to absorb Britain into some creepy all-powerful Euro state.

And that’s exactly what they did. Germany emerged as the dominant player and German became the common language” P. 1-2 L. 22-7. Law is not making his own opinion completely obvious here, he is using indirect argumentation.

It is almost a way of manipulation. Without directly telling the reader what he is thinking, he makes the reader subconsciously think it themself. This method can be useful in cases like this where the writer wants to create opinions.

Throughout the article Law also uses direct argumentation. He often states his opinion clearly for the reader to know and understand.

With his arguments, Law also plays with sympathy. He uses the fact that he himself is from a country where the language has been taken over by English to create pathos. Pathos is useful in an article like this.

Readers create their own opinions when reading this article and by including stories that create pathos, Law can subconsciously manipulate the reader to feel the same way he does.

Another example of Law trying to persuade the readers is by using direct addressing. He calls the reader “you”, here referring to English speakers, which makes the article feel more personal for the reader.
