Good morning fellow students

My name is Melissa and I’m currently studying here at the University of London with you guys. Today I’m going to talk about illegal immigration in the US. I’m going to explain the immigration reform made by President Obama among other things such as Donald Trump’s point of view on immigration.

I’ll also be talking about opposing views concerning the general issue about immigration and then round off with a small discussion whether the reform is going to solve the problems with illegal immigration in the US.

So, to start off; Obama recently announced his new immigration reform which covers a direct effect on approximately 4 million undocumented immigrants, who all could gain protection from deportation.

An undocumented immigrant, also called an illegal immigrant, is a person who emigrates to a foreign country, which they live in without a visa or other legal documents.

The reform includes two major differences. First, immigrants who have been in the country for at least five years will be able to stay and apply for work permits if they have a child who is a US citizen or has a legal permanent residence.

According to the Migration Policy Institute, around 3.7 million people will be eligible to apply for this program.

Another scheme will benefit around 300.000 people. Already approximately 1.2 million young people are protected from deportation with the program called DACA, but by the change where Obama has abolished the age-limit, the program now allows people older than 30 to apply for this program, meaning another 300.000 people now can apply.

Still, around 6.2 million people will not be able to apply for any of the programs which forces them to stay in the US illegally
