Indledning
Sometimes you can be aware that you are doing something you should not, but you still do it. That is also the case for the main character Robert in the short story “Love for 17.50$” by Charles Bu-kowski where Robert seemingly has a mental illness and is trying to fight it but fails.

The story touches upon different themes such as mental illness which is illustrated in the form of the main character being in love with a mannequin.

Other themes such as shame and grief are also touched upon. Shame being one of the themes is explained by Robert being shameful about his passion for dolls which is shown when he hides them every time, he has company.

Robert knows he has a psychological problem but is struggling to refrain from his passion for figures of women.

We are presented with this theme of self-consciousness on several occasions during the short story where Robert knows he has a problem and what he is doing might be considered taboo or at least weird to others.

The first time we see Robert restraining himself from giving into his addiction is in the very beginning where “He [limits] himself to making love to statues and mannequins in his sex fantasies…” (4).
