The TED talk “Conscious Consumerism” focuses a lot on the topic of women’s consumer power, and how we as women have the biggest purchasing power in the world
and that our shopping choices can influence a society and the economy for either the better or worse, as we’re also according to Ridgway-Cross three times more likely to consider a company’s ethics.
Ridgway-Cross explores throughout her speech the issues related to corporate social responsibility and consumer activism.
She’s using the words “consumer” and “power” a lot throughout the speech, which refers to the people’s capacity to put pressure on businesses to deliver a type of product and have certain business practices
that typically demand better quality products, customer services, production conditions, and prices. She therefore explores the relation to conscious consumerism
where she states that we should be very mindful of what kinds of products we’re buying, the brands we choose to love and that type of companies we’re buying from:
“When I talk about conscious consumerism, I mean being very, very mindful about the kinds of products we buy, the kinds of brands we choose to buy, and the companies that we buy from.” (ll.36-37)
She refers to the fact that we as women have absolute and unequivocal control of the purse. Three-quarters of all purchases that happen on the planet are made by women, which translates to twenty trillion dollars in the consumer which is spent each and every year.
