The short story "A Place in the Sun" by Joanne Harris begins with a brief statement about the residence Platinum Sands™ the most exclusive of all the beaches in Brazil.

This statement is made by the protagonist, a young teenage girl. Throughout the story, she provides a sneak peek into the struggles in climbing to the top of the youth beach society Sands™.

The protagonist is a recent silver sands member and desires to become a part of platinum sands.

But this is not easy work; the Sands™ hierarchy is built around achieving the most flawless look, something that seems unachievable without psychical alterations.

The short story "A place in the sun" begins in media res (ll.1-22) and is unlike many short stories not structured around a single event.

The story follows a non-linear plot structure, where the writer focuses more on our protagonists ' psychology.

The narrative consists of elements such as backstory, an example of this is seen in lines (ll. 26-28) where we learn that the protagonist is a recent member of Silver Sands™

after being on the waiting list almost two years. The writer also uses foreshadowing, especially in the beginning, in lines (ll. 1-7) to slowly unveil the extent and value appearance has in this society.

The story takes place in a fictional futuristic/dystopian segregated society, where the citizens' social statuses and success is dependent on their physical appearance.

The short story has no primary physical setting, although our protagonist refers to many different physical settings that all are located in one of the Sands™ beaches in Brazil.
