1. Who is Malcolm X?
- Malcolm X was an African American leader in the civil rights movement, minister and supporter of Black nationalism.
He urged his fellow Black Americans to protect themselves against white aggression “by any means necessary,” a stance that often put him at odds with the nonviolent teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr.
2. Who are the Black Panthers?
- The Black Panther Party was a political movement founded in 1966 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale.
They also fought for black liberation and organized community programs. Maverick follows their lead by running a grocery store, helping to nourish the community.
4. “That‟s when I realized Williamson is one world and Garden Heights in another, and I have to keep them separate.” Page 39 Line 22 In your opinion, why did Starr think this?
- Because she is living in two different cultures, it is necessary for her to change personality whenever she is in the two different cultures.
That way, she code switches as she puts on a facade in one environment, and is more herself in the other environment. In that way, she is dependent on keeping the two worlds separate.
