Indledning
The film is about the life of Cecil Gaines who worked his way from picking cotton on a field to become a Butler and serve in the Whitehouse for over 20 years.
During this time, a lot of changes took place in America particularly in regard to the civil rights. Back home Cecil Gaines had his problems with his oldest son who became a freedom rider and later became a part of the black panthers.
Cecil Gaines don’t want his son to get killed so he won’t support him in doing such things, and it leads to a bad relationship between the two and they stopped talking to each other for a lot of years.

The freedom riders was a group of activists in the 1960s and they arranged non-violent demonstrations against the racial segregation in America.
One of their demonstrations could be driving in freedom busses around the country, which we also see in the film.
Another could be when they didn’t care about the segregation between colored and white people in café’s and then sat on the white people chairs in the café until they gets removed by force.
A lot of them ended up in jail for making those peaceful demonstrations even if they did not really do anything wrong.
