Anne Cassidy's story "Shopping for One" depicts the narrative of Jean, a UN employee who is queuing in the grocery shop and overhears a conversation between two girls ahead of her, a blonde and a dark one.

The dark lady talks about another woman and her partner, recalling seeing her at a family gathering. The blonde lady mostly nods in response to the dark lady's remarks until she finally mentions that the dark lady's adult male approached her.

The adult male of the dark woman cheated on her, but afterward returned and apologized. Jean is disturbed by her poking, which concerns the few things she has purchased that suggest she is unmarried while overhearing this spoken discussion.
