In Carl C. A. Christensen's comprehensive painting Crossing the Mississippi on ice, those inspiring values are portrayed. The painting depicts a frigid winter day.
The biting weather causes the Mississippi river to freeze solid, which allows the many travelers to seize the opportunity of relocating. A relocation could for many mean a new beginning, thus the chance of an improved existence.
The painting also presents the people as highly self-reliant seeing that the picture offers no suggestion as to where the people are headed, but the focus is more set on leaving the safe and known behind.
