Without an education, it can be hard to gain a successful and joyful life. Compared to people with an education you are almost certainly the first one to be let go, which means in almost every job there is a constant risk of being fired.

Often this will result in changing job occasionally. Many would argue that it is not healthy to live a life like this, where there always is a risk that you cannot provide shelter and food for your family the next month.

This is the subject “Job history” brings into focus.
The events take place in a lot of different environments, because of Leeland constantly change of jobs. But generally seen, the social environment is the same, just in different locations set in America.

The social environment is characterized by being in the lower/middle class and depressing surroundings throughout the story.

Examples from the text “…his mother inherits a small dog-bone ranch. The ranch lies a few miles outside town. They raise sheep, a few chickens and some hogs.

The father is irascible and, as soon as they can, the older children disperse” , and we are also told that the father can be somewhat abusive “His father strikes him with a flyswatter and tells him to shut up.” .

We are presented to two main characters in the short-story, Leeland Lee and Lori Bovee. They are characterized as “round” characters, which means that they are complex like people in real life.

Leeland Lee is born on November 17, 1947, and is the youngest child of six. Leeland seems destined for a hard life, already at the beginning of the story. He is described as an awkward looking boy and a quitter who never achieves anything.

He left high school at the age of 17, in the advantage of marrying his high school girlfriend Lori Bovee. The only time in the story where Leeland achieves something reasonable is when he impregnates his wife Lori. This summarizes, what kind of a life Leeland Lee is living.

Leeland’s father is described as irascible and as told, he could be somewhat abusive and Leeland’s elder siblings dispersed as soon as they could.
