1. Describe the environment of this short story. Do we know where this takes place?
To me, the environment at first seems to be very idyllic especially when he is describing the nature that surrounds him. Within the first lines, the eastern mountains in the west are described.
This can be interpreted as the story taking place in the western North Carolina where the Appalachian range is located.
Later on, the eastern skyline is also mentioned which adds to the reflection of the story being located in North Carolina.
He is at one point explaining the coldness that he is feeling, which tells us that it is properly around the winter season.
The most important part of the story takes place at the tent of the family he shares breakfast with.
They are living in a poor environment, which is visible in different contexts. It can be seen when the young woman is setting the table with tin cups and tin plates which are known for being cheap.
2. Explain the plot: What happens in the story?
The story describes a pleasant feeling the narrator is recalling from his memories.
He remembers an early morning, where he was walking along a country road. At some point, he sees a tent in the distance.
Once he comes closer, he is invited to share breakfast with the family who lives in the tent.
