It is and has always been a hard task for a leader to make a country ready for war. It is all about the choice of words. Many great historical speeches are proof of the well-known fact that the power of words is essential.

Simple words of hope can generate courage among a population and lead a whole nation to victory. Winston Churchill’s speech “Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat”, from 1940, is a true proof of this.

The speech becomes persuasive in the way Churchill engages his listeners. Churchill uses the means of persuasion throughout his speech, and he uses them very successfully.

Ethos is especially used in the first half of the speech. He is the new Prime Minister and has received the King’s commission to form a new Administration.
